Sahaviriya Steel Industries PLC announces its climate change policy for the group of companies, outlining specific targets, strategies, and operational guidelines. This initiative aims to achieve the group’s carbon neutrality and net zero emissions, aligned with national policies and environmental agreements on climate change. The company is dedicated to advancing steel products, innovations, technologies, and integrating clean energy, all in pursuit of securing a sustainable future for the steel industry.
Mr. Win Viriyaprapaikit, Group CEO of Sahaviriya Steel Industries Public Company Limited (SSI) said that SSI, as a leader in the country’s steel industry, recognizes the significance of addressing climate change to achieve carbon neutrality. It’s a global challenge impacting the economy, society, and the environment, both in the present and in the future. Consequently, the company is determined to conduct business while considering climate care in line with the country’s policies and international environmental agreements regarding climate change. In response, the SSI Group has announced its climate change policy with the objective of effectively managing climate change within the group through the following ways:
- Setting targets, strategies, and operational guidelines to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions for the group of companies, in line with the country’s climate policies and global climate agreements.
- Generating the Carbon Footprint for Organization (CFO) report aims to drive effective management in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions across the group of companies.
- Promoting energy usage, maximizing natural resource efficiency, fostering research, enhancing innovations and technologies, and tracking policy initiatives, carbon markets, and financial support needed for sustained reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change impacts.
- Raising awareness and encouraging participation in emissions reduction from operations among employees, customers, business partners, and stakeholders, while also facilitating knowledge exchange within the organization and beyond.
Furthermore, SSI has implemented initiatives to demonstrate its steadfast commitment and dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. 1) In terms of products, SSI has set a goal to upgrade 11 steel products, which currently meet the ISO14021 (Type II environmental labeling), to achieve ECO PLUS certification by The Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (DEQP) and The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) by 2025. Additionally, the company is striving to develop 9 steel products to acquire an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). 2) In terms of circular economy, SSI ensures the efficient utilization of all resources; recycling and reusing 100% of water resources and production waste. 3) In terms of clean energy, SSI explores the utilization of renewable energy sources, including solar energy, biomass, and biogas, with a focus on leveraging local community potential and fostering their economies. The goal is to entirely replace fossil fuel usage with renewable energy sources. Additionally, SSI is researching clean energy production technologies, such as Green Hydrogen, which emits no CO2 into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the company plays a crucial role in advancing the entire hydrogen energy value chain.
Mr. Win concluded, “Climate change is one of the world’s greatest challenges, impacting us in every aspect, including the economy, society, environment, and people. It is essential to turn policy into action, with everyone being aware and involved in mitigating its impact throughout the value chain, ultimately striving for carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions to ensure a sustainable future for the industry.”
